Sampling and Sampling Distributions

چکیده

A sample is a group of objects or readings taken from a population for counting or measurement. We shall distinguish between two kinds of populations — finite populations and infinite populations. The sample must be random, meaning that all possible samples of a particular size must have equal probabilities of being chosen from the population. This will prevent bias in the sampling process. Most modern sampling procedures involve the use of probability sampling. In probability sampling, a random devicesuch as tossing a coin, consulting a table of random numbers, or employing a random-number generatoris used to decide which members of the population will constitute the sample instead of leaving such decisions to human judgment.

Subjective Sampling Distributions and Conservatism 1

When people revise subjective probabilities in light of data, revisions a r e less than the amount prescribed by the normative model, Bayes's theorem. Previous research suggests that this results from the subjects' lack of understanding of the implications of the data; i.e., from inaccurate subjective sampling distributions. This experiment examined the effects on conservatire revisions of trai...

Sampling Methods for Wallenius' and Fisher's Noncentral Hypergeometric Distributions

Several methods for generating random variables with univariate and multivariate Wallenius' and Fisher's noncentral hypergeometric distributions are developed. Methods for the univariate distributions include: simulation of urn experiments, inversion by binary search, inversion by chop-down search from the mode, ratio-of-uniforms rejection method, and rejection by sampling in the t domain. Meth...

Measuring Indoor Air Distributions

14 Indoor air distributions, such as the distributions of air temperature, air velocity, and 15 contaminant concentrations, are very important to occupants’ health and comfort in 16 enclosed spaces. When point data is collected for interpolation to form field 17 distributions, the sampling locations (the locations of the point sensors) have a 18 significant effect on time invested, labor costs ...

A First Step to Understanding the Difficulty in Teaching Sampling Distributions, Sampling Error, and Statistical Inference

Even after having taken an introductory statistics class, many students continue to struggle with the concepts of sampling distributions, sampling error, and statistical inference. As a first step in identifying ways of more effectively approaching these topics, the poster will examine methods currently used in popular text books and propose an alternative based on using binomial and Poisson di...
